Yan Diomande: From rejections to Real's doorstep

Long before Yan Diomande became a €100 million footballer, there was a little girl in Abidjan who never doubted he would make it. Roxane, his sister, would tell anyone who would listen that her older brother would become the world's best footballer. She never lived to see it, but every step Diomande has taken since has carried her with him.

That promise has carried the 19-year-old to the doorstep of Real Madrid. According to reports, the Spanish giants have agreed personal terms with the RB Leipzig winger and are prepared to pay more than €100 million to prise him away from Germany, fending off competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

It has been a remarkable rise for a boy who grew up sharing a home with 25 people in Abidjan. Diomande would pretend to be asleep before sneaking into the living room to watch football on a muted television, dreaming of emulating Cristiano Ronaldo in a fake No. 7 shirt. Beside him was Roxane, his loudest supporter and self-appointed agent.

His rise almost stalled before it began.

After moving to Florida in 2022, he impressed for Yulee Hornets High School, but rejection became a constant. Trials at Chelsea, Bournemouth, Rangers, Crystal Palace and Olympiacos all ended without a contract.

"You're really good," Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise told him after one session. The clubs disagreed. Even MLS reserve teams passed, and with his visa expiring, Diomande feared the dream was over.

Leganes finally said yes, offering him his first professional contract in November 2024. Four months later, he made his La Liga debut against Real Madrid and scored against Real Valladolid despite the club's relegation. Leipzig's data scouts, however, had seen something others had missed, urging the club to activate his €20 million release clause in July 2025.

Just as his career gathered momentum, tragedy struck. Roxane, only 15, died after her drink was allegedly spiked at a party back home.

"Everything I do on a football pitch, it's for you," the winger paid tribute to his late sister in The Players' Tribune during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Leipzig's faith was quickly rewarded. Armed with blistering acceleration, two-footed dribbling and the fearlessness to attack defenders on either side, Diomande finished his debut Bundesliga season with 12 goals, eight assists and the Rookie of the Season award.
