YOU'RE THE WORST: THE FUNNIEST NEW SHOW OF 2014

You're the worst centers on two toxic, self-destructive people who fall in love and attempt a relationship. Jimmy (Chris Geere), a self-involved writer, and Gretchen (Aya Cash), a self-destructive Los Angeles PR executive, attempt a relationship, with hilarious outcomes. The show is brilliant at using clever writing and its stars' palpable chemistry to balance comedic elements against its realistically pessimistic tone. Most sitcoms take a little time to find their voice, but 'You're the Worst' is strong with the very onset of the pilot episode. It was instantly one of my favorite shows on TV and has only gotten better. It has plenty of funny one-liners and silly situations, but it's real strength is creating interesting characters that have depth. This is not a show for those expecting jokes thrown in and comedic circumstances created to make a show funny, this show focuses on very real humour, as in everything you see in the show is relatable to real life, regardless of how funny it is! The show uses a lot of crude humour and is not suitable for children. Usually, this is the kind of show most networks would probably ruin by demanding the characters come off as more likable or moral. But FX has been bold enough to let shows like Louie, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Wilfred create strong characters who may not always be likable, but are always interesting and real-life. 'You're the Worst' is one of the most well written comedies on TV. They respect their audiences' intelligence and don't try to cram a well packaged moral out of every episode. They play television to its strengths and savor the subtle changes in a person's life and a romantic relationship that a feature film wouldn't have time to show. The acting has been terrific and you'll grow to love the characters despite their flaws and the despicable things they often do. The show is perfect for couples to watch together, and it will also be a lot of fun for close friends to watch together as well. With an 8.3/10 on IMDB, 79% on Rotten Tomatoes (Audience Score 97%), this is the must-watch comedy series of 2014.
