Rape attempt on JU campus: Seven-member probe body formed
Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have formed a seven-member investigation committee to probe the attempted rape and assault of a female student on campus by an outsider on the night of May 12.
The decision was made at an emergency administrative meeting on Saturday night with JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan in the chair, according to a press release signed by Mohammad Mohiuddin, director of the university’s Public Relations Office.
Prof Dr Md Sohel Rana of the pharmacy department has been appointed convener of the committee, the release said.
The committee has been tasked with determining responsibility for the incident, assessing possible lapses in campus security by relevant offices or individuals, and submitting recommendations based on its findings.
Other members of the committee are Prof Dr Nahid Akhtar of the department of botany, Prof Md Zakir Hossain of the department of philosophy, Prof Dr Nasrin Sultana of the department of government and politics, Prof Dr Md Kamruzzaman of the department of zoology, and Prof Md Zahir Rayhan of the department of philosophy.
Deputy Registrar of Higher Education and Scholarships Lutfor Rahman Arif will serve as the member secretary.
The committee has been asked to submit its investigation report within seven days, the release added.
