Two candidates appeal nomination cancellation in Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association election

The election of the Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association has run into fresh complications after seven years, as two candidates have challenged the cancellation of their nominations.

Presidential candidate Khorshed Alam Khosru and general secretary candidate Shamsul Alam filed appeals with the Election Appeal Board on Tuesday (July 7), seeking a review of the decision that excluded them from the list of valid candidates.

The two candidates argued that the constitutional provision cited to cancel their nominations does not apply to them because it came into effect after they had submitted their nomination papers. They have also challenged the decision in court.

In his appeal, Khosru said the election schedule for the 2022–2024 Executive Committee election was announced on  March 1, 2022. He said he submitted his nomination for the post of president within the deadline of April 18 after fulfilling all the requirements of the election schedule.

However, he said the Election Board cancelled his nomination on April 20 by citing Article 5(5) of the association’s constitution. He described the decision as “unreasonable”.

On July 5 , the Ministry of Commerce published a list of 40 valid candidates for the association’s 2026–2028 biennial election. The exclusion of Khosru and Shamsul from the list officially confirmed the cancellation of their nominations.

The association last held an election on July 27, 2019. Since then, the voting process has remained stalled due to legal disputes, disagreements over the voter list and administrative complications.

While preparations are now underway to hold the long-awaited election, the nomination dispute has once again cast uncertainty over the process.
