Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ nears $2.3 billion milestone

Sony and Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is closing in on becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time, with its global box-office earnings nearing the lifetime collection of “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

The Tom Holland-led superhero film has earned approximately $2.33 billion worldwide after spending its fifth consecutive weekend at the top of the box-office charts. It is now within reach of the $2.32 billion global run of “Avatar: The Way of Water”, which currently holds the third position among the highest-grossing films worldwide.

In the United States and Canada, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” added $22 million during its fifth weekend, taking its domestic total to $891 million. The film is now $45 million away from the unadjusted domestic record of $936 million set by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015.

The film has dominated the North American box office throughout August, becoming the highest-grossing film in US theatres on every day of the month except August 21, when another Sony release, “Insidious: Out of the Further”, opened.

The Marvel superhero film has also maintained a strong run in India. It opened with a first-day collection of Rs 60.60 crore nett and earned Rs 334.75 crore nett during its first week. The second week added Rs 108.65 crore nett, followed by Rs 32 crore nett in its third week and Rs 13.65 crore nett in its fourth week.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s India net collection has reached Rs 494 crore, while its gross collection stands at Rs 590 crore.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” follows Peter Parker as he continues his life as Spider-Man after being forgotten by those closest to him. The film also stars Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon and Sadie Sink.
