‘Manushtike Dekh’ set for Pahela Baishakh release
A new film directed by Gazi Rakayet titled “Manushtike Dekh” (See the Person) is set to hit theatres across Bangladesh on April 14, marking the occasion of Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year.
Rakayet previously directed the films “Mrittika Maya” (2013) and “Gor” (2020), both of which received critical acclaim and were screened at several international film festivals. The two films also earned multiple categories at the National Film Awards.
His third feature film, “Manushtike Dekh” (See the Person), focuses on raising awareness about cerebral palsy while challenging the stigma and misconceptions surrounding people with disabilities. The film aims to encourage greater empathy and understanding toward persons with disabilities.
The project was financed by the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP). The original screenplay was written by British writer, producer and director Elspeth Waldie, while producer Humayun Farid translated the script into Bangla. Rakayet and Farid jointly edited the translated screenplay and wrote the dialogue.
The recently released trailer offers a glimpse into the story, which centres on Farida, a journalist with a disability who also runs an organisation supporting children with disabilities. Her life takes a turn when she meets Firoz, a wealthy man who falls in love with her. Meanwhile, another disabled man named Abdul becomes entangled in criminal activity against his will and is eventually framed by criminals and arrested by police. Farida then takes on the mission of proving Abdul’s innocence, while also confronting opposition from Firoz’s father, who disapproves of their relationship.
The film features an ensemble cast including Rashna Sharmin Camey, Tahmid Arefin Haque, Tariq Anam Khan, Mili Bashar, Mamunur Rashid, Rahmat Ali, Shatabdi Wadud, Lara Lotus, Ehsanur Rahman, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, Rajib Saleheen, Sharmimala, Mrinal Dutta, Ananda Khaled and Tahmina Mona.
CRP founder Valerie Ann Taylor also appears in the film as a guest performer.
