At least three Indian states, including West Bengal and Maharashtra, today announced the withdrawal of all Covid-19 restrictions from Saturday while the authorities in Delhi decided to do away with the penalty for not wearing masks in public places.

The withdrawal of the restrictions came almost two years after the pandemic had struck India in March 2020.

The use of masks will not be mandatory in Maharashtra, the state government said, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) today decided that there will be no fine for not wearing face masks in public places in the capital, official sources said.

They added that the DDMA, however, is likely to issue an advisory for people, asking them to wear masks in crowded places.

At present, there is a fine of Rs 500 for not wearing masks in public places in Delhi.

With the pandemic situation has considerably improved in West Bengal, the state government also announced that all curbs related to the contagion would stand withdrawn from midnight.

In a notification, the government, however, stressed the use of masks and hand hygiene maintenance until further order.
