AL has majority among councillors

Good for balanced leadership in Gazipur
ACCORDING to a leading Bangla daily's report, unlike what happened on July 6 mayoral race, candidates for ward councillors in Gazipur city corporation polls have shared the seats among pro-AL and pro-BNP candidates in a relatively even manner. Of the total 57 ward councillor posts, pro-AL candidates bagged 27, pro-BNP 25 and the rest have been taken by JP and independents. It bodes well for the growth of a balanced leadership in running the affairs of Gazipur city corporation. It seems voters of Gazipur have given more importance to local issues and personal qualities of the candidates in electing their ward councillors as distinguished from national issue casting influence on the mayoral election. This, however, marks a departure from the general trend in the results of the June 15 four city corporation elections in which pro-BNP candidates virtually swept the board: 75 posts out of a total of 116 went to BNP-backed candidates. The balance in the distribution of ward councillors at Gazipur is likely to have a sobering elect on the mayor-elect. The greater number of councillors from his rival camp may prompt him to listen to their side of the argument in taking decisions and allocating resources for the development of Gazipur city corporation. More importantly, the ambience of bonhomie between the winning and the defeated mayoral candidates can have a positive impact on the city's future. And the commitment of mutual cooperation they have made will definitely reflect on the overall development of Gazipur city.
