Limon let off, finally

We demand adequate compensation
THE home ministry has withdrawn the police cases filed against the hapless college boy of Jhalakathi, Limon Hossain. At long last, the government seems to have acted on wisdom, rather than by the dictates of hubris. This step by the government will help Limon and the poor family he hails from to return to normality without the fear of being constantly persecuted by an agency of the state. This marks the victory of an individual over the state helped immensely by the supportive role played by the NGOs, civil society, the intelligentsia, the rights groups and the media. They all stood as one demanding justice for a helpless victim. The withdrawal of the cases against Limon bears testimony to how a relentless campaign did overturn a bad move driven by arrogance of power to suppress the vulnerable. Here is an example of a boy from a poor family who became a victim of circumstances from the day one. He was framed up in criminal cases involving possession of arms in a bid to pull the wool over public eye about his being maimed. Actually, the authorities should apologise to him and his family and help him stand on his feet. The government has not finished its duty just by withdrawing the cases against Limon. It must now hold to account those who wronged him as well as compensating him amply for the damage done to him. We demand adequate compensation.
