MPs' misuse of apartments
Lawmakers flouting rules!
WHEN we talk about corruption and misutilising our country's resources, 66 lawmakers appeared to have been a part of it directly by allowing their relatives, personal staff or other associations live in apartments allocated for them as members of the parliament. This is not a new phenomenon, but a practice which has been happening for years. And even after bringing it to light in the past no steps have been taken to solve this issue.
The MPs do not have to pay rents but only a 600 taka monthly service charge for these apartments. These 66 lawmakers have allowed caretakers, drivers, relatives and others to live in these apartments without taking any permission from the parliament. In turn they have affected the environment of the MP apartments by allowing in outsiders in an area supposed to be an exclusive zone. There are security implications to such callous indifference to basic rules of conduct. The lawmakers who stay at their allocated apartments with neighbours of different kinds are furthest from happy about this situation.
The lawmakers not using their allotted residences have not thought about giving these places up so that they can be used in the right way. These days many of the lawmakers have independent houses in rather expensive areas of Dhaka city, they have all the facilities they need in these homes. If that is the case, then why waste the space by misusing it?
