Terrible city traffic woes

Call for focused measures

HEIGHTENED Ramadan-time mobility has brought  into sharper focus the messy traffic points  rendered constricted , even impassable, thanks to flyover construction projects gone haywire. Haphazard mounds of dug-up earth, gaping cleavages, potholes and puddles have not left  any diversionary spaces on both sides of certain important connective roads to arterial thoroughfares and major traffic intersections. Resultantly, the entire area stretching from Satrasta crossing to Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh and Banglamotor intersections is   a complete mess This also has had  a terrible chain effect over parts of Pragati Sarani and Tongi Diversion Road.
An investigative report in this paper on Wednesday graphically highlighted  the  fact that  the commuters, in a bid to avoid tailbacks in the areas, move to Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue exerting pressure on the entire  thoroughfare . Concomitantly, the policemen keep the red signal on up to 20 minutes at a time to cope with the heavy traffic. This is both a management nightmare for the traffic personnel as well as costly waste of time and stressful inconvenience for the commuters and pedestrians. The swarms of novice pullers of illegal rickshaws make it all so very messier and dangerous indeed.
Clearly, it is well past the time for any palliatives or adhoc measures. The communication minister in a meeting with representatives of some concerned agencies has instructed officials to make the disheveled roads under the apparently suspended flyover projects useable. This temporary relief will be welcomed during Ramadan. But this by no means goes to the heart of the problem.
