‘Shekor’ set for international release from August 2

“Shekor” (The Roots) releases today in 11 cinemas across Bangladesh, including Star Cineplex, Lion Cinemas and Shyamoli Cinema in Dhaka, Modhuban Cineplex in Bogura, and K Screen in Cumilla.

“Shekor” (The Roots) tells a story about homeland, family, identity, memory, faith, love and the deep connection people feel with their roots.

The film follows Akash, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Canada, who returns to Bangladesh with his eight-year-old daughter, Simin, after 12 years. Through the eyes of a child who was born and raised abroad, the story explores her father’s homeland and Bangladesh’s culture for the first time.

FS Nayeem plays Akash, a single father, while Muntaha Amelia stars as his daughter, Simin.

Director Proshoon Rahmaan said, “Simin was born and raised in the mechanical life of a foreign country. When she sees her father’s homeland and her grandmother’s loving face for the first time, I tried to see the country and this moment through her eyes full of wonder.”

Proshoon Rahmaan is known for films such as “Sutopar Thikana”, “The Birthland” and "Dhaka Dream”, which explore migration, displacement and the crisis of identity.

The director said, “The film is centered on how people who move away from their roots see and feel their homeland, and how they want to introduce the next generation to the country they left behind.”

FS Nayeem said, “The story brings together the emotions of expatriates, their love for their homeland, their mothers and even their former lovers. My character returns to Bangladesh with his daughter because of the pull of his roots. Every character in the story is a hero. Every character is important. To Bangladeshis living abroad, this is your film. You will find a part of your own story in it.”

The cast also includes Dilara Zaman, Somu Chowdhury, Sangeeta Chowdhury, Nafis Ahmed, Nairuz Sifat and Mahbubur Rahman.

“Shekor” (The Roots) will be released in three Canadian cities on August 2. It will later be released in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in September. The film will also be released in several South American countries in Spanish. The Spanish dubbing has already been completed.
